Let us begin this narrative accordingly. So what happened was that eighteen months ago there was a coup détat in the Ukraine, the result of yet another round of Maidan protests. The bloodthirsty dictator Yanukovich was dishonourably ousted and replaced by unalloyed proponents of European integration. It must be said that quite a few peoples brains were frostbitten during the Maidan demonstrations. As a result they became fervent believers in the idea that its sufficient to want to live in a new country in order for life in that country to transform. Theyre mainly enraptured young people without a clue about the way of the world. Yet sly politicians slyly turned the whole thing to their advantage. All of a sudden Russia and Europe were at loggerheads and the people had to pick a side. The younger and more naive bought into the Ukraine is part of Europe” mantra, which laid the groundwork for myriad idiotic actions and phenomena. Потому что настоящая Украина выглядит так (город Нежин, родина Гоголя): Despite all of that, the ways of the powers that be didnt change (with two or three exceptions, all for show). Meanwhile, the poor people of Ukraine, whod believed that Europe was within reach, were hoodwinked like no one had managed to hoodwink them in 23 years of independence. And not a single one of the believers in a bright Eurofuture is giving any thought to how to turn Ukraine into Europe. Because this is what the real Ukraine looks like (the town of Nezhin, Gogols birthplace): 2% упоротых регулярно встречаются в каментах, но в реальной жизни народу пофиг на все эти пиздострадания. The diehard 2% can be seen in online comments sections on a regular basis. However, in real life people couldnt give a flying fuck about all this drama. In Kiev (and in three or four other major cities) theyre showing off, burnishing their European credentials, complete with displays of European symbols (thats a photo of the Ministry of Justice, no less!). The national museum of Russian art in Kiev (where all they exhibit is dreary provincial artsy crap) is trying to lure in visitors with the banner Europe is our home”. This is what the German ambassadors residence looks like. Not even in the turbulent 90s did it come to this in Russia. Illegal traffic cones guard the pavement front of the residence; theyre attached to the kerb with metal chains. After all, here in Europe youve got to keep an eye on your property. Having said that, it would be unfair to accuse the Germans of being rude. The Norwegians are doing the exact same thing: Pining for Europe, theyve put in trendy new benches in the park. But it isnt that easy to extirpate your Slavic genes. Therefore saboteurs and opponents of Eurointergration have stuck in a rubbish bin next to each pair of lovebirds sitting on the benches. Ukraine used to be called Malorossiya (in other words, Little Russia) and was part of the Russian empire. Today many find any reminders of this upsetting, although the toponym lesser” is by no means offensive (the inhabitants of Malaya Arnautskaya are no worse than the people of Bolshaya Arnautskaya). The plaque on the monument to Gogol remains in place for the time being: Also, the double-headed eagles on the bell tower of Saint Sophia Cathedral havent been smashed up yet, even though there are almost a dozen of them hanging up there: The eagles overlook Sofia Square, where modern Ukrainian weaponry is displayed and where the president rails against Russian aggression. Behind the president — this is what Ukrainians defending their country from Russia now look like. The power of the undefeated! To be fair, this is the very same photo that was hanging on Maidan square a year ago, except that now people have cottoned on to the fact that the covered up face doesnt tally with the word fearless. Spirited and fearless. Glory to Ukraine! On the Russian language. The official authorities of the Ukraine have always repressed the Russian language. The law on compulsory dubbing of movies into Ukrainian was adopted 10 years ago. What was the first law that the interim government passed after Yanukovich escaped and before pesky Poroshenko got elected? On the foundations of state language policy”. Indeed, even the pro-Putin jingoist Yanukovich didnt bother to adopt legislation granting Russian official state language status. This notwithstanding, Ukraine is a Russian-speaking country. And theres nothing any law can do about this. Of course, the chances of meeting someone who strikes up a conversation with you in Ukrainian are higher in a Zakarpattian village. However, in 95% of cases people still speak Russian. And this has nothing do with who currently sits in the Kremlin. Ukraine is a Russian- speaking country, thats all. If you fly into Kiev and walk around all day youll have to go out of your way to find people talking to each other in Ukrainian. Of course, these people do exist. And sure, young people get a real kick out of knowing a whole other language — all the twentysomethings love speaking Ukrainian. But its not the default setting. Many people discern the party line and toe it. Thats why the advertising inside the airbridge at Borispol airport uses the same font size for Russian as it does for Greek. Whereas this is what it looks like when people are writing for their own use: By the way, the number of signs in Ukrainian in Kiev has increased. There arent as many as in Odessa, of course, but theres definitely been an uptick. No one is smashing in the windows of Russias Sberbank, nor slapping sanctions on it. (To be fair, the Ukrainian presidents chocolate factory in Russia hasnt run into any real problems either, in fact, it produces a quarter of the countrys caramel.) On civilisation. In the Ukraine theyve got everything smug Russkis are accustomed to. There are a few exceptions, which are sorely missed. First of all, theres no Ikea in the Ukraine. Theres Jysk, but its a sub-par substitute. Second, theres no Uber in the Ukraine. Nor GetTaxi. Nor Yandex.Taxi. Whats more is, theres no decent nationwide app you can use to call a cab in any large city. There are small, overpriced, provincial companies providing a shit service dispensed by churlish taxi drivers. In Russia Id completely fallen out of the habit of raising my arm to flag down a taxi; in the Ukraine I had to relearn that skill. However, most of the time I drove around in my own car, which has ordinary Moscow number plates. No one slashed our tyres in the night, the coppers didnt harass us, and no one threw any tomatoes or eggs at our windows. At the Moldavian border they were stunned as shit, but they let us through. I caught the eyes of some of the other drivers who were staring at my plates. Their faces said, Would you look at that — Russian number plates!”, but it was good-natured astonishment. I feel the same way when I see Ukrainian number plates in Moscow. Having said that, an acquaintance of mine moved from the Donbass to Kiev and his car, which has Donetsk number plates, was burnt down one night. He went to the cops, but they told him that 21 cars with Eastern number plates had been set alight that night. That sort of thing definitely doesnt happen any more. Third, and this is saddest bit, theres no quality journalism in the Ukraine. They dont even have talk or news radio. Newspaper and online news site headings are bloody awful. The quality of information and analysis is so embarrassingly poor that its not even funny. Things they have in the Ukraine, but dont have in Russia. Only two things. A new postal service and a new police force. The new postal service is essentially a greatly expanded, swift and effective courier service. There are branches everywhere and it works like clockwork. For the time being, an effective post service is something we can only dream of in Russia. The new police force is made up of totally adorbs hipsters, whove been issued with Prius patrol cars and forced to never ever turn off their blue sirens. They patrol the streets of Kiev, spreading the word about their own good work. Everyone adores them; they wouldnt hurt a fly. Basically, this is a voluntary neighbourhood watch squad, universally liked. We need this kind of police force in Russia (our current one is pretty good too, but it doesnt engage in this sort of self-promotion). On the economy. Everythings fine in the Ukraine. No one is dying of hunger; no one is going to freeze to death in winter. Everyone drives very expensive cars. Back in the spring Kiev was somewhat dispiriting and my favourite places to hang out had closed, but theyve caught up over the summer. Plenty of great new cafés, bars and restaurants, their crowds and flavours a delight. Curiously, the propaganda on both sides describes the horrors and the ominous prospects of the neighbouring country. Russians think — weve got it made; meanwhile, Ukraine is turning to shit. Ukrainians think the exact same thing about Russia. Theyre both wrong. Of course, Ukraine is not richer than Russia, but there arent any calamities or popular impoverishment in the offing. Kiev in 5 years time is... Propaganda.
The most interesting part is that in Russia everyone knows that theres state propaganda. Thus everyone takes all news broadcast on Channel one with a ginormous grain of salt. The propaganda is way worse in the Ukraine, yet people dont suspect that its there. Thats because everyones like, hey, this is Europe, what propaganda are you talking about? Whilst Ukrainians have got used to the ban on Russian TV channels, many are surprised to learn that the new government has also banned the Euronews channel. The pillars of Ukrainian propaganda: we won freedom from slavery, sacrificing the Heavenly hundred, Russia annexed Crimea and was plotting to snatch the Donbass from us, but our valiant soldiers gave those dumb jingoistic Russians a good hiding, whilst Europe supported us by imposing sanctions on Russia, so weve won. The pillars of Russian propaganda: Ukraine went completely tits up, fascists came to power, we prevented pogroms in Crimea, which we should have never handed over in the first place all those 23 years ago, then fascists burnt 50 people alive in Odessa, following which they started shelling Russians in Donetsk and Lugansk, but the miners militia stood up for freedom, as per our grandfathers parting wishes. Both positions are so objectionable to the people on the other side of the border that mutual mudslinging is inevitable.
Not all of the opposing sides arguments can be understood. So let me draw an analogy. In Russia no one gives a shit about the Heavenly hundred victims to the same degree that in the Ukraine no one gives a shit about those who perished in the Odessa fire. To make it easier for Russian readers to understand how you can just not give a shit about the people who lost their lives in the fire, heres a telling example: Americans dont remember the fact that four planes went down on September 11 because the media only disseminated images of the two that crashed into the Twin Towers. To wrap up — the view from the studios Kiev office, which will outlast any and all Ukrainian presidents. |
